Southern Pine Awareness Network & Habitat for Humanity:
A Partnership Built on Strength
When the Southern Pine Awareness Network was created in January 2005, one of our main goals was to give back within our communities. Given the nature of our business, Habitat for Humanity seemed a logical charitable choice. Over the past several months we've worked with three affiliates across the Southeast: Mobile County in Mobile, Ala.; Metro Jackson in Jackson, Miss.; and Charlotte, NC .
We're donated truckloads of Southern Pine framing and interior flooring to all of these homes as we worked side by side with the affiliates and fantastic volunteers building a new future for some wonderful families. Our Charlotte home features a new trend: treated framing. By using treated Southern Pine to frame the entire house, we've added another layer of protection between the family and moisture, mold, decay and insect damage.
Southern Pine has a strong presence in Habitat homes already; many home plans in use call for Southern Pine for its superior strength and durability. The house in Mobile has experienced damaging wind and rain from Hurricanes Dennis and Katrina, while the Jackson house also experienced part of Katrina; all are still standing strong and tall. Flooding was never a threat since the homes are built on raised floor foundations.
All homes are due to be dedicated within the next two months; that means by Thanksgiving, three families will be sitting down to their dinner under a new roof. Home, sweet home.
If you're looking for a way to give back and become a greater part of your community, contact your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. It's a strong program with proven results.
Our thanks to the SPAN members (denoted by a *) and other companies who donated materials to these three Habitat homes:
