Southern Living Magazine 2009 Idea Houses

Each August, homeowners nationwide eagerly await the arrival of their Southern Living magazine in their mailbox. Why? It's the annual Idea House issue! The "bible" for all things cool for the home, the how-to of home design, the recipes to make you a kitchen diva.

The August 2009 issue doesn't disappoint: featuring two 2009 Idea Houses, the magazine is chock-full of gorgeous color photos, great home improvement ideas and loads of information about both.

The Southern Pine Awareness Network was proud to be part of the Southern Living Idea House program again this year. Check out all the decks and porches in both homes: they're constructed using pressure-treated Southern Pine, one of the most environmentally friendly and beautiful outdoor project building materials on the market. Texas Idea House, Mustang Island - Tarpon Run

The pull of the sea is intoxicating: it makes us want to throw caution and shoes to the wind and frolic on the sand and in the sea without a care in the world. Tarpon Run, perched at the edge of the Texas Gulf Coast, brings the beauty and colors of the ocean into the house and integrates them in such a way that land seems to flow effortlessly into sea.

The many outdoor living spaces of Tarpon Run bring the daily needs of seaside living right to the front - and back - door with natural ease. The front porch, the second-floor porches with their breathtaking views of the tides and even the clever fish-station all allow for traditionally outdoor activities to take place under the comforts of your own roof. Naturally, all decks and porches in the house are built using pressure-treated Southern Pine. For what goes better with such staggering nature than a truly natural building product?

Why did Southern Living choose pressure-treated Southern Pine for the decks and porches in their 2009 Idea Houses? Beauty, strength, affordability and connection with nature. Southern Pine is one of the only building products on the market that's naturally renewable and recyclable. It's produced by the rain and the sun - not oil, gas and other finite resources. Pressure-treated Southern Pine withstands the elements of nature while blending in with the natural surroundings. Take a look for yourself:

Georgia Idea House, Dahlonega - Hemlock Springs

Clinging to the side of a North Georgia mountain, Hemlock Springs integrates the indoors and outdoors seamlessly, creating a truly livable home. Gorgeous natural colors flow throughout the home, casting a spell of welcoming warmth in each room.

With the tap of a touch screen, glass doors open up 12 feet of wall connecting the kitchen to the kitchen porch. Look to the right and the porch extends into a gracious deck that swoops across the back of the house, granting breathtaking views of Georgia pines and soaring hawks. Constructed entirely of pressure-treated Southern Pine, the porch and deck blend perfectly with the mountainside, nature emulating nature. Decorated with comfortable chairs and low tables, this deck creates a five-star dining experience among the beauty of nature

The second floor features a unique Retreat Room: a cozy, book-filled nook with glass windows peeking down into the living room. Open the exterior glass doors to a private deck designed to offer a quiet getaway close to nature. Naturally, the deck was built with pressure-treated Southern Pine.
