Before: Kitchen before adding Southern Pine beadboard paneling to island.
After: By adding the Southern Pine paneling and painting it a warm pumpkin color, the entire kitchen now looks warmer and more inviting.
James and Brittain were very happy with the look and feel of their home, except for the kitchen. “To say that our kitchen is “out-dated” may be a little too nice,” explained James. “We really want to replace the appliances and add granite counter tops, but with our budget we had to look for a more practical approach to spicing up our kitchen. We have an island in the center with a lot of surface area, so that seemed to be the place to start. We decided to add southern pine wainscoting.”
Once the paneling was installed and painted, James and Brittain couldnt believe what a difference the project made. I really didnt expect this project to have such a huge impact, said Brittain. Focusing on this one small area of our kitchen made the entire room feel more cozy and stylish.
According to James, the process was really easy.
Carefully measure (then re-measure) before making any cuts.
Steps:
- If you have an overlapping counter top with support anchors, remove the counter top to unscrew the anchors;
- Measure the area to be covered;
- Use a skill saw to cut the wainscoting to the proper measurements;
- Apply a generous portion of liquid nails to the underside of the wainscoting;
- Use two to four finishing nails per panel to tack each side - this will secure the panels while the liquid nails dry and makes it easy to keep the panel in place;
- Measure the height to cut the corners molding;
- Use finishing nails to install the molding;
- Use 1 x 4 board as the base;
- Cut the corners at 45 degrees;
- Use finishing nails to install the baseboard;
- Replace the anchors;
- Replace the counter top;
- Paint;
- Done.
