2007 "Get Decked out with Southern Pine!" Deck Contest
Beaufort, South Carolina, is known for many things: its annual music festival, the gorgeous waterfront area, delicious seafood served up by fabulous restaurants and, of course, the Mermaid Project. But now this pretty lowcountry town has another jewel in its crown: Beaufort is home to the winner of the 2007 "Get Decked out with Southern Pine!" deck contest from SPAN — the Southern Pine Awareness Network.
Paula Loughlin, a part-time resident of Beaufort, won the deck through by entering the contest sponsored by SPAN and Southern Living Magazine. Paula and her husband are semi-retired and live part of the year in West Hampton Beach, NY.
The Deck
The custom-designed deck covers 550 square feet and fits in perfectly with the natural backyard. The pressure-treated Southern Pine used to construct the deck came from Wolmanized Residential Outdoor Wood; additional prizes included a grill from Char-Broil, a grill pad from The Original Grill Pad, hand-painted Southern Pine deck furniture and more.
Pressure-treated Southern Pine lumber is one of the best choices for decking material. The unique cellular structure of Southern Pine allows it to accept preservative treatments better than any other species, resulting in strong, durable, beautiful wood for decades to come. Southern Pine lumber is family-friendly as well: it does not conduct heat in the summer, which means little ones won't burn their feet in the blazing Carolina sunshine. Southern Pine decks are easy to maintain and are proven to be safe for families and pets. An extra benefit? Southern Pine lumber is one of the only renewable building materials on the market.
